Site Safeguards Officer – Solomon Islands

We are seeking a full-time contractor to work on the Tina River Hydropower Development Project, located on Guadalcanal, Solomon Islands.
You will provide environmental and social safeguard support to Stantec as the Owner’s Engineer.
The role will involve compliance monitoring against a series of Construction Environmental and Social Management Plans during construction of the access roads, temporary and permanent infrastructure (dam, tunnel, powerhouse etc.). You will also monitor contractors, sub-contractors, and other site personnel, to ensure implementation of required mitigation and monitoring measures during construction. Auditing and reporting on this compliance will also be required.
Your Day-to-Day Responsibilities will include
- Undertake day to day oversight of the implementation of the CESMPs on site.
- Monitor the practical implementation of on-site environmental and social controls (e.g., health and safety, erosion and sediment control, spill response, waste management, environmental monitoring, emergency response etc.).
- Maintain accurate records of on-site investigations and monitoring.
- Provide environmental and social safeguard monitoring updates for inclusion in the monthly reports produced by the Owners Engineer.
- Build and maintain relationships through collaboration with project stakeholders.
To be successful in this role, you will need
- 5+ years of experience in site-based construction management for large infrastructure projects
- Strong and proactive health and safety culture.
- Good working knowledge of site environmental, social, health and safety (ESHS) risks, mitigation and monitoring.
- Experience in the implementation of Construction Environmental and Social Management Plans (CESMPs).
- Experience in on-site monitoring and/or auditing of construction projects.
- Experience working and communicating in a direct and clear manner with construction contractors and a range of stakeholders.
- Excellent spoken and written English.
- Current and clean passenger vehicle drivers’ licence.
Desirable skills (Optional)
- Degree qualified and/or ISO certified
- Knowledge of national and international laws, environmental and social safeguard policies and guidelines e.g., World Bank, Asian Development Bank, International Finance Corporation etc.
- Offroad driving / four-wheel drive (4WD) trained
- Spoken 2nd language – Korean, Mandarin and/or SI Pijin
